Content / Steps
Before the activity

Students may collect photos of “reusables” from newspapers or print from the internet.

  1. Students are divided into groups, and Replace means everything? worksheet is distributed to each group. They are required to complete Part One.
  2. Plays Replace means everything? education clip to class and discuss with students about the behaviour of the character in the video. Focus on how binge shopping for reusables can lead to waste problems, highlighting the message "Replace Works, Reuse Works Better."
  3. Ask students to finish Part Two and Three of the worksheet.
  4. Explains “7Rs of A Zero Waste Lifestyle”.
  5. Ask students to finish Part Four of the worksheet.

  • Have you ever made the same mistakes like the character in the video, believing that “Replace” solve all waste problems?

    “Replace” is one of the solutions to waste problems. Substituting disposable items with reusable ones can significantly decrease waste. However, if we continue to purchase or collect reusables without limits, we still end up generating waste. Having more than we need is essentially the same as creating waste.

Part Three:Replace means everything?

Read the text below and answer questions (write answers in the blank and circle correct answers)

Fact One

In mid-19th century, the upper class in America and Europe used ivory in accessories and household items. The demand for ivory caused large amount of hunting of elephants. Therefore, a company in New York offered US$10,000 reward for developing replacement for ivory.

By 1869, American inventor John Wesley Hyatt successfully created a substitute for ivory using natural materials. His invention, celluloid, reduced the demand for ivory and became a model for future plastics.

Fact Two

During the old days, people cut a lot of trees to make paper bags. In 1959, the Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin invented durable plastic Vest Bag to replace paper bags and save trees.

According to the information above, plastic is a replacement of _______, and plastic bag is a replacement of _______, both were invented to protect the environment. But people  misuse / rarely use   plastics and plastic bag, and use the plastics and plastic bags as  single-use products / reusable products , which caused ________. Although “replace” is important,  bear in mind to apply reasonably / largely  to achieve environmental protection.
